SOC's Information and Assistance programs exist to provide timely information and personal assistance to seniors and their families in matters such as home care agencies, senior housing, Medicare, transportation, health and human services, senior resources and more. If you have a question, I&A is the place to start!

Case Coordination
It takes great patience and understanding to learn what another person wants, needs and feels. Our Case Coordination program helps seniors who need extra attention. Read more >>

Appropriate services are arranged, along with ongoing personal contact as needed. Though seniors are referred to Case Coordination for a variety of reasons, our social workers always focus on the client’s self-determination, empowerment and dignity.
Call Nina Mondalek, BSW at 313.882.9600 Ext. 241 or e-mail socninam@yahoo.com for assistance.

Medical Equipment and Lending Closet
Has a hospital stay, recent injury or just coming-of-age as a senior presented a need for medical equipment? Services for Older Citizens has a medical loan closet with equipment and supplies for seniors to borrow at no charge. Read more >>

SOC relies on the generous donations from our community to keep the loan closet full. Our supplies of items constantly change depending on seniors’ needs, as well as donations received. If there is a specific item you need that is not on the list, please call and we will place you on a “Need List.”

Items SOC often has in the Lending Closet:

  • Wheelchairs/Accessories: standard wheelchairs, cushions and trays
  • Crutches, Walkers, and Canes/Accessories: crutches, folding walkers (with or without wheels), rolling walkers with folded seat, canes, quad canes, walker extensions, replacement tips, trays, baskets for walkers, tennis balls for gliding.
  • Bath and Shower Accessories: bath benches (with or without back), transfer tub benches, extended foot brushes, extended back sponges, safety tub bars, portable shower heads
  • Toileting Items: commode chairs and raised toilet seats (accepted only if new), adult incontinence briefs (with or without tabs: all sizes), male guards, feminine products, under pads, flannel rubber bed pads, disposable washcloths
  • Aids for Daily Living: reachers, dressing sticks, sock aides, step stools, cast and bandage protectors, long shoe horns, 42” leg lifters, pill boxes, magnifying glasses, bedside support rails, ramps
  • Cushions: gel foam
  • Nutritional supplements
  • Miscellaneous items: procedure masks, latex gloves, diaper wipes, standard head phones, telephones, fans

SOC welcomes all donations to help keep our medical and supply closet full. Items that we often run low on are adult incontinence briefs, male guards and feminine products.

Tax Preparation Assistance (Feb through Apr)
SOC works with AARP Tax-Aide to offer free, quality, confidential tax preparation service.  Please note that those taxpayers with complex tax returns will be advised to seek professional tax assistance.  Tax preparation assistance will be available on specific dates at Services for Older Citizens by appointment only.  Check the Special Events page during tax season for more information on dates and times.

Flu Vaccine Clinics (Oct and Nov)
Each year, SOC offers flu shot/pneumonia shot clinics in conjunction with the Visiting Nurse Association at our facility.  The vaccine is especially recommended for people 65 and older. The vaccinations, which are covered by Medicare, are available by appointment only.   Please bring your Medicare card, driver’s license or Michigan identification, and any supplemental health insurance card.  Check the Special Events page in the fall for more information.

Medicare Open Enrollment Oct. 15 - Dec. 7
Prescription Drug and Medicare Advantage Plans
If you are a Medicare beneficiary, you are eligible for Medicare prescription drug coverage regardless of your income, health status, or current prescription expenses.  Read more >>

Everyone eligible for Medicare has the chance to review and make changes to their Medicare coverages for the new calendar year. You can change your prescription drug coverage as well as any supplemental or Medicare Advantage plans you've elected. SOC has partnered with the Michigan Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program (MMAP), which has trained volunteers who can provide assistance. To receive individual assistance with a volunteer, please call SOC at 313.882.9600 to schedule a one-hour appointment.

Friendly Visits
Friendly visits, sociable phone calls, reading, writing and rides are all small things that can make a huge difference.

If you would like to receive assistance, call Heidi Uhlig at 313.882.9600 Ext. 247, email socheidi@yahoo.com.
